Week 1

This week we started an introduction to the research project. On monday we all sat in class and we dicussed the subject itself. We were given booklets from Ms McInnes with ideas in them with research topics. By the end of the lesson we were asked to have a topic chosen at the end of week 2. On Tuesday we used Wonder Wheel to help further our research for our chosen topics. Wonder Wheel is a very useful resource which broadens your topic and makes your questions become more indepth. During the week i had been thinking about what i wanted to research and i thought about doing Obesity, body image or something completlely different, fashion.
On Thursday we went to the library and the class looked through books with lots of different research topics in them to give us some ideas of the sortstopics we can do our projects on. Friday i spoke to Ms McInnes. A classmate and i went down to the library to get books on our topics. I came to the conclusion of doing Eating Disorders as my research topic, this is because i believe that many people suffer from them this these days and its a serious problem. The more i thought about it, i realised that i wanted to do my whole project on the adolescence and their disorders because its most common in the younger generation.

This article is about Eating disorders and talking about how these disorders in eating patterns can cause obesity. Anorexia nervosa, bullimia, rumination disorder and pica come about to avoid obesity. People with this disorder really become distorted by malnourishment, This is particularly common in teenagers girls, and it is much less common in males. Researchers believe thatv anorexia and bullemia are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.

BIG OREXIA

This article discusses research, carried out by Kelly Klump and Kristen Culbert, into hormones in prenatal gender development as they relate to eating disorders occurring in adoloscence. It reports that Klump and Culbert studied women with male twins and found that they have fewer eating disorders. It describes this study, published in the March, 2008 "Archives of General Psychiatry," as part of a controversial body of literature

As you can see ive chosen articles about eating disorders about loosing weight and focusing more on the area of skinny and loosing weight. The range of eating disorders is too broad so im narrowing it down to the eating disorders like bullimia and anorexia nervosa. Thats my main focus throughout this research topic.

Week 3

- This week Ms. McInnes ran through the principles of CRAP and showed us many different sites that helped understand the concept of it.

CRAP stands for Credibility, Reliability, Authority and Purpose, this principle helps students when they are evaluating information and making sure they have reliable sources being provided to them.
- We were also introduced to the 5W's which are Who, What, Why, When, and How
- This week we are required to write up our research project which aims to explain all our intentions and processes that will go through during our Research Project.

Proposal.

My research project is on Eating Disorders, mainly in adolescent girls. I chose to do this topic because i am really interested in finding out more about this disorder and understanding how it really affects peoples live's these days. Eating Disorders are such a major problem these days because people either over or under eat, or they have others criticise them and that affects their self esteem so they change the way they look to fit in. Some ways that i can develop my topic and increase my knowledge and information on eating disorders will be by possibly interviewing somebody who suffers from this disorder. I could also do a general survey around the school and ask basic questions and tally up the answers into a chart. Many people may be ashamed to admit that they have an eating disorder to a persons face but could answer honestly on a survey and open up their reasons why they have a disorder. Hopefully i can ring someone up and talk to them about eating disorders because they would have a larger capacity of knowledge on the specific topic. This would be very useful and help me to continue my research develop. During this process i hope to learn alot from my sources and from to really personally develop greatly. This subject will improve my skills but the project itself will change me as a person because i will understand more and help people if they need it because i will have a broader range of information. I will talk to members of my class to see if they know anyone that i can contact and also to my teacher to hopefully get more information or articles on eating disorders.

Week 4

http://www.thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/
This week i looked up websites that can help and me project. This website provides me with a foundation that supports people who suffer from an eating disorder, i did some more basic research on my topic and i found some more relative sites that will help develop my knowledge greatly.

Week 5

Monday i was away sick and therefore i missed out on our first lesson of the week. Tuesday morning i started doing the five whys and i thought about starting doing an online survey or a paper survey on eating disorders. I looked at the site and was thinking about the questions that i was going to put in there.
Five Whys:
  • Why do people suffer from eating disorders?
People suffer from eating disorders because they want to be skinnier.
  • Why do they want to be skinnier?
They want to be skinnier because they feel pressured to fit in.
  • Why do they feel pressured to fit in?
They feel pressured to fit in because on tv the teegagers and popular people are potrayed as skinny and therefore people especially teenage girls these days like they have to have that specific and desired look.
  • Why do they portray that certain image for youth to follow?
They portray that image for youth to follow because alot of people think that it is better to see skinnier girls rather than bigger and more curvy girls. To some ''the skinny look'' is more appealing and therefore girls try to fit in with the look and stop eating.
  • Why is the skinny look more appealing?
The skinny look is what all the models and cover girls look like. Girls with no curves or body fat seems to be inforced by the media as like the perfect body for those sorts of things career choices and aspirations. The look is only more appealing to some people not everybody but the girls who under eat to be like this is bad for their health.

Week 6

Monday: This lesson Ms McInnes went through our rubric and what qualities and standards of work we need and the differencences between an A and an E. Tuesday morning i went on the Zoomerang Site to start doing and online survey. This will be very useful and hopefully i will be able to get alot of information from this resource.

Some of the questions i will put into my survey will be such as. .
  1. How does having an Eating Disorder affect your life?
  2. How does an Eating Disorder make you feel?
  3. What has made you want to under or over eat?
  4. What are the social pressures that have an impact on your Eating Disorder?
  5. What age do Eating Disorders primarily affect?
  6. What gender struggles more when it comes to an Eating Disorder?
  7. Who should you speak to if you have an Eating Disorder?
  8. What should you do in general to help yourself overcome this health isssue?
  9. Do you know anyone with an Eating Disorder?

I spoke to Ms McInnes about who i should contact for my interviews and she said that i should talk to someone like a pyschologist or possibly a school counsellor. I told her that i previously looked on the butterfly foundation. We found a link that i will email that i will get in contact with. I have to look further into the website so that when i talk to Rebecca i won't ask her information that is already on her site. I will introduce myself and hopefully get indepth answers that will really strenghten my project. After talking to the butterfly foundation i will hopefully talk to another adult that has suffered from this or is still battling this disorder and i will get a different point of view as my second interview. Once i have done both of the interviews and then i will compare what both people had to say and see the differences between them.

Week 7

I was away on tuesday for an excursion and therfore i missed out our double lesson. I was told that everyone got a blue folder which has our marks on the rubrics so far for our projects. I didnt recieve one because of being away on my excursion. My main focus right now is to have my discussion and get onto my interviews.
Thursday morning we had to work on our discucssions and get examples of our work so then we can refer to them during our discussion with Ms McInnes. We need information that we have found, our proposals, results from our surveys or evern just our survey questions. We have our discussions recorded and sent into the SACE so then we can have it marked by them to get our SACE grade.
Friday we went to a computer room and we just worked on our discussions again. Ms McInnes spoke about how we need to plan our discussions thoroughly and make sure that they are really good. We need to make sure that we use our time in the discussion wisely so then we can get as much of our information across as possible.

One problem that i do have though is my survey results are very low. Only 3 people from my class have filled it our and there is about 30 students in here. I would really appreciate it if more people if not all of the people filled it out to help me. Ms McInned has mentioned that to the class today but i dont think that many of my fellow students followed through. If i got alot of people to fill it out i can make a graph of the results and put it on here so that i can see the information in a different form.

Week 8

Monday afternoon Ms McInnes spoke to me about how i am going at the moment with research project. i am getting a 'B' and im happy with that. She made me a blue folder with my assessment sheet and she highlighted the marks on my rubric. After we spoke about that i continued getting my sources together for my discussion. We need to book a time with Ms McInnes for our disccussion and as she is away right now , i will book one for thursday morning. Right now i will be trying to e-mail the butterfly foundation to try to interview someone about eating disorders via the internet instead of face to face. Hopefully this type of interview will be really helpful and efficent. I will also try to talk to a counsellor or possibly someone from Shine Sa to see if they know some people that i can talk to about my topic. If i can get in touch with both then i will have two different sources of information for my interviews which will increase my knowledge and understanding greatly.
Thursday morning i found out that my research topic is pending because of the possibility that i may be running a human experiment. I confirmed with Ms McInnes that i will not be doing any human experiments for my topic eating disorders. Many people had the same problem with their topics and some will have to restart theirs all over again due to the fact that some of the topics have been done before. This leaves the teachers thinking that that there might be people who are plagarising other peoples work in this subject. I will do my discussion next week and definitely book a time so that my discussion can go to my term 1grades.

Week 9

Monday Ms McInnes was away and therefore i couldnt book a time with her to do my discussion. I will try to get a time to do my talk with her early tomorrow morning to get in over and done with. We were booked into the new library to work on our research topics. We used the new computers and continued on with our journals. I am really, really hoping to get in contact with someone about my topic in the next week or so, then i can write about the interview and use that to further my knowledge on this topic. Tuesday morning i told Ms McInnes that i was unable to email someone from the Butterfly Foundation regarding my topic. Therefore i need to get in contact with someone fast so that i can say that i have interviewed a person with knowledge on my task. I also spoke to Ms McInnes about my discussion and i will do it with her on Thursday lesson 1. After my discussion i can write in my journal and reflect on how my talk went. I went down to the library today and i found newspaper articles from 2years ago
on eating disorders. There are two articles on males and the third one is a general article about eating disorders. I missed my discussion with Ms McInnes on thursday morning because i couldnt find her. I looked everywhere for her but she couldnt be found until our research project which was the following lesson. I re-scheduled my appointment with her and

Week 10

On thursday Ms McInnes showed us two different examples of an ''A'' grade research project and an evaluation. Both examples were very good which made me feel bad. My project looks nothing like that does and i really have to work my but off to do well and for SACE especially. I would really like to be able to have an end product like those two examples that were shown because they looked fantastic and were very indepth.

Friday we were just writing in journals again and i was told that my grade has dropped due to me being away last week. Therefore i have to do my discussion on monday morning with her in the library. That will boost this terms grade.

Research Evaluation Key Points:
1. of research processes used e.g. books, internet, interviews, EBSCO host, news, magazines and experts
2. of your chosen capabilities
3. aspects of outcome and relevance to you and others

NOTES:
I told Ms McInnes about the fact that i couldnt get a hold of anyone from the Butterflyfoundation. I tried e-mailing them but it wouldnt send through. We logged back on the the website and today and we found a phone number to Melobourne that we could ring. We tried for about 10 minutes but we were unable to speak to someone because the phone was continuosly engaged. I now have to find a different way to interview someone due to the fact that the experts were out of reach. This makes my research topic become a bit more of a struggle because we were meant to have someone interviewed by now. Hopefully Ms McInnes and i can figure out a way to get an interview done with a cousellor or someone who knows someone that has an Eating Disorder.

Week 11

On monday i did my discussion with Ms McInnes in the library. My discussion went for 11 minutes and i think it went really well. It was straight forward and easy. After my talk with Ms McInnes she looked on the computer for books in the library that were on my topic' 'Eating Disorders''. She found a novel that was based on a true story called 'Winter Girls' and two other picture books that have a lot of useful information. When i was borrowing my books a student from the school told me that he had an eating disorder and that he is stilll midly suffereing from the disorder and he said that he said that he was anorexic. He started to stop eating when he was 8 years old because he was fat. Ms McInnes asked if he would consider me interviewing him because i haven't been able to get an interview done yet. He said no and i completely understand that he doesn't want to share his experiences. They would have been very hard to go through and but i said to him that the information he gave out will be kept confidential.

Thursday we listened to Ms McInnes talk about our outcomes that we need to write and roughly what we need in it.

My draft Outcome

Introduction:
My hypothesis is ''Eating Disorders really do have a huge effect on lives these days.'' In this topic i am looking at which gender suffers more and what impact it has on the lives of the people that have the eating disorders. I chose this topic because it has become a real issue these days and also because i want to find out a lot of information on the subject to help support people to conquor this particular disorder. I find this to be a very interesting topic and i am learning valid information that will be useful. Hopefully by the end of this subject i would have constructed something that will have lots of information to help anyone that has this type of disorder.

  • Parent/Guardian
  • A trusted teacher
  • School counsellor
  • A doctor
  • A close friend
Sources/Quotes/mind maps etc..
  • Read through many books and magazines
  • I have used the internet
  • I conducted a survey for my fellow classmates
  • Will have an interview with a school counsellor in the next few weeks
  • An anonymous student gave me some valid information as a primary source

I will use sources from the books and magazines that i have used.

Week 12

Ms McInnes spoke to the class about how serious our last weeks of this topic are. It's crucial that we get all of our information together and that we start writing up our final products. I looked on ABC News for different resources of eating disorders and i found loads of articles and alot of stories regarding my chosen topic.
I spoke to Ms McInnes today about the 10pages that we have to do and she suggested that get more newspaper articles and and sections from magazines so that i can show that i have reliable sources and information. I have been asked to contact my local doctor to get a time to see someone so that i can ask them about eating disorders and where people that have them go. I need to try to do this as my interview so that i can say that i done have done my interview for my project and then it will help further my topic and increase the knowledge that i have on eating disorders. I hope to ring up sometime in the next few weeks and get a time or an interview with a specialist and then record the interview with them, and possibly get a brochure aswell.

Week 13

external image Anorexia+nervosa1.jpgexternal image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTtPNjbTZ8ogDV5GGKXxXpuOmCdu6FTw1-cNvd37NEsDoruJGOM6A&t=1
I was looking on the interent for more images and i found these two. This proves that there are males that have a problem and that eating disorders in men are becoming more and more common these days. Ths picture of the girl is horrific, she is so skinny and very underweight. She's is most likely continuously sick and she may have a disease due to her body size and how much of her bones are exposed in the image. Having pictures such as these being shown to the world is a good and bad thing. It shows how peer pressure and media can really affect someones self esteem and confidence and also what it does to the person. It's good only because you can see the damage that all of this does to people but it's bad because it looks sickening and it's not in any way healthy.

I did another wonder wheel showing how i have refined my topic to anorexia nervosa.
I found some more books in the library with articles on Anorexia Nervosa and Eating Disorders. There is questions
